Hefei among Top 5 Chinese AI Leaders

Hefei, capital of East China’s Anhui province, took the fifth spot on a list of top 15 artificial intelligence (AI) cities in China, according to a white paper released by Chinese research company CCID Consulting.

The white paper on the development of Chinese AI cities reviewed the AI industry in nearly 40 cities and made the top 15 list.

Before the publication of the document, the company set up an appraisal system for AI city development, based on a number of criteria including government policies, research and development (R&D) capacity, industrial level and capital market.

Beijing topped the list, followed by Shanghai and Hangzhou.

Known for its strength in R&D and adequate incentives, Hefei emerged as the top fifth AI city in China.

The city is home to the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and industrial leaders like iFlytek and Huami. The National Engineering Laboratory for Brian-inspired Intelligence Technology and Application, the sole national research facility for brain-inspired intelligence, was also located in the city.

The AI sector in the city employs 0.8 percent of the staff of the country’s AI sector as a whole, and has raised capital of 450 million yuan ($66 million), or 0.9 percent of the national total, the white paper said.

The document suggested Hefei make improvements in AI industrial development and brand-building.
